Years ago, as a struggling college student living in a cramped dorm room, I always looked for affordable ways to eat healthier. Fresh veggies were a luxury I couldn’t always afford. Still, I was determined to find a solution. That’s when I discovered sprouting—a method that promised fresh greens with minimal cost and effort.
With a nearly empty wallet, I couldn’t even afford the proper equipment. So, I grabbed an old Powerade bottle from the recycling bin, poked some holes in the bottom, and turned it into my first sprouting jar. It wasn’t the prettiest setup, but it worked. Within days, I had fresh, crunchy lentil sprouts. They were packed with nutrients, and I felt like I’d discovered a secret to healthy eating on a budget.
As time went on, I began experimenting with different methods. I upgraded from the Powerade bottle to a homemade sprouting jar, using a Mason jar with cheesecloth. It was still a DIY project, but it felt like an improvement. The satisfaction of growing my own food, even in such a small way, was something I carried with me long after college.
Fast-forward to Blooming Health Farms, where those early lessons in sprouting took on new life. When we had extra sprouts on the farm, I realized that our chickens could benefit from them, too. We started feeding them the surplus sprouts, and the results were fantastic. The hens were healthier, the eggs were better and they cut down on waste.
But we didn’t stop there. Inspired by those early DIY solutions, we’ve taken things to the next level with 3D-printed lids designed explicitly for sprouting jars. These lids are a testament to how far we’ve come—from poking holes in a Powerade bottle to creating custom tools for our farm. They make the process even more accessible and efficient, allowing anyone to start sprouting right at home.
So, if you’re looking for a way to grow fresh greens, don’t worry about having the perfect setup. Start where you are—whether it’s with an old bottle or a Mason jar. The important thing is to take that first step. You never know where it might lead you. For me, it was the start of a journey that’s now helping us feed our chickens and share healthy, sustainable practices with our community.
Mason jar
Pencil or pen
Scissors
Cheesecloth or window screen
Mason jar metal band
Bowl
Flip the Jar: Start by flipping the opening of your Mason jar upside down on your cloth or screen.
Trace the Circle: With a pencil or pen, carefully trace a circle around the mouth of the jar onto the cloth or screen.
Cut it Out: Now, grab your scissors and cut out that circle, making it just a touch bigger than your tracing. You want it to fit snugly, not slip through.
Fit the Lid: Place your cut piece inside the metal band of the Mason jar, just like you’re securing a lid.
Seal the Deal: Screw the screened lid onto your jar, and there you have it!
Sprout Away: Fill your new sprouting jar with your favorite seeds, add water, and let the magic begin.
